October 10, 2009 Program

Chris Cozen “When Golden Digital Grounds Meet the Inkjet Printer” Chris is essentially a self-taught artist with an innate undestanding of color and design. Many of her pieces are “stories” of people and experiences, enriched with pieces of famly history. She especially enjoys collage and assemblage as they allow her to incorporate into her work, “treasures” she collects that help her tell a story.

Both her mixed media canvases and her assemblages are colorful, whimsical, and intricate, builing layer upon layer of meaning along with the color and collage elements. It is important to Chris that people engage with the story being told, even if they end up tell- ing a different story than was in her mind when she began the piece. She has written two books: Altered Surfaces, 2008 and Transfers & Altered Images, 2009. Chris will do a 1 1/2 hour lecture/demo for the general meeting followed by 1 hour brain- storming session and a 4 hour hands-on workshop for those members who choose to sign up. Chris Cozen’s workshop will be $57 for members, $67 for non-members. Plus a $10 fee for ink for the printer.

Participants would need to bring 3 to 5 pieces of pre-washed fabric, ironed onto 8.5 by 11 inch pieces of freezer paper. (It is easier to iron slightly larger pieces of fabric to the freezer paper and then carefully cut to 8.5 by 11 inches. The paper/fabric will be going through the printer.) These fabrics will be prepped as part of the morning program with the appropriate digital ground. After the lecture, Chris will conduct a brainstorming session to exchange ideas about how to “interpret” the fabrics, which images or manipulations of images might be most compat- ible with the fabrics. All fabrics are possible for printing as long as they are thin enought to make it through the printer feed. Since the digital grounds also come in white, patterns can be tempered with them or allowed to be completely visible with the clear grounds.

To sign up for the workshop, email Rebecca Janes at rjanes@mac.com

About Surface Art Assocation

The Surface Art Association (SAA) includes artists who work in a variety of media: weaving, painting, collage, sculpture, complex cloth, book arts, paper arts, art to wear, stained glass, jewelry, and mixed media. Some members are exhibiting fine artists and others are just getting started in their creative ventures.

We meet bi-monthly in the Powell Gallery of the Design Center located on the Woodbury University Campus in Burbank, California. Meetings often feature a presentation by a guest speaker.

The SAA is a local chapter of the Surface Design Association, based in the Greater Los Angeles area. We have adopted the Surface Design Association’s Mission Statement as our own: “To increase awareness, understanding and appreciation of textiles and surface art in the art and design communities as well as in the general public. We also intend to inspire creativity and encourage innovation and further the rich tradition of textile and surface art through publications, exhibitions, conferences and education opportunities. Membership in SDA is not required to join SAA

In our second year of operation in June 2006, SAA put on a two day Regional mini conference at Woodbury. A keynote address by UK Laser Artist Janet Stoyel, and a varied selection of lectures, presentations and hands on workshops taught by an amazing group of teachers was featured. The conference was very well attended and we are looking forward to the future of another Regional conference at Woodbury University.

Surface Art Assocation general meetings are usually held the 2nd Saturday of every other month ie Feb.,Apr.,Jun.,Aug.,Oct. ending the year with our annual SAA holiday party in December. Our meetings begin with check in and social time at 9:30am . At 10:00am business reports and announcements precede the guest speaker presentation. We break for lunch at 12:00 and if there is an afternoon program we reconvene at 1:00pm often in a workshop format. Workshop fees are seperate from the meeting.

Membership in the Surface Art Association entitles you to attend our general meeting, receive our emailed newsletter, periodic emailed information updates of exhibits, lectures, shows etc. and a link to your own personal website on the SAA website. The newsletter is sent out about two weeks prior to the next general meeting. If you wish to attend a meeting as a guest you may do so for a fee of $5.00. If you are a Woodbury student with a current photo i.d. there is no charge to attend a meeting. We often schedule workshops by the speaker/presenter. The workshops usually take place at Woodbury on Saturday afternoon following the meeting, sometimes continuing on Sunday and there is an additional charge to attend the workshops.

February 14, 2009 our general meeting will be devoted to members sharing their creative work. We meet regularly as a group of artists, but we are not always aware of the ways and means we each use to create our art. This meeting is about seeing each other’s work and strengthening our connection within SAA community by allowing the free flow exchange of ideas and inspirations.

August 18, 2009 Kath Danswan will be coming from the UK to present her creative expression of sculptural freemotion machine embroidery in the form of silk bowls. Kath will be conducting a day and a half workshop following her presentation.

June 13 SAA member Julie Kornblum will be presenting presenting a slide show and lecture titled “Out of Tradition” about her artistic journey from traditional weaving into her current passion of creating using mainly recycled materials. Julie will be teaching a day and a half workshop called Trash to Treasures: basketry with recycled materials.
