The Surface Art Association was established in 2005 with support from the Surface Design Association. The membership is open to anyone who has a passion and interest in increasing awareness, understanding and appreciation of textiles and surface art in the art and design communities as well as in the general public. It is the goal of SAA to inspire creativity and encourage innovation and further the rich tradition of textile and surface art through publications, exhibitions, conferences and education opportunities.
The Surface Art Association (SAA) includes artists who work in a variety of media and is dedicated to artists whose primary focus are the creative use, alteration and embellishment of textile/fiber surfaces. This includes, but is not limited to weaving, painting on fiber and textile surfaces, collage, sculpture, complex cloth, art to wear, and mixed media. Some members are exhibiting fine artists and others are just getting started in their creative ventures. SAA in addition to the artists in their membership, welcomes educators and individuals who are interested in sharing their creative knowledge and innovations, exhibiting artwork and furthering the dialogue of surface design.
Meetings: SAA meets bi-monthly in the Powell Gallery of the Design Center located on the Woodbury University Campus in Burbank, California. Meetings feature a morning lecture by a guest speaker and are often followed by an afternoon workshop. Surface Art Association general meetings are held the 2nd Saturday of every other month (February, April, June, August, October and December). The Decmber meeting is the annual SAA holiday party.
SAA meetings begin at 10:00am with check in and social time at 9:30am. Business reports and announcements precede the guest speaker presentation. We break for lunch at 12:00 and if there is an afternoon program we reconvene at 1:00pm often in a workshop format. Workshop fees are separate from the meeting.
Membership: SAA is a membership organization. Membership entitles you to attend all general meetings, receive the newsletter via email, attend workshops at a reduced rate and post images and a website link on the SAA website. Membership is $35 per year and is not prorated. Members may bring guests to meetings for a fee of $5.00. If the guest would like to join the $5.00 is deducted from their membership. Woodbury students with a current photo ID are welcome at all meetings free of charge. Download a Membership Brochure.
Workshops: Throughout the year SAA also sponsors workshops that take place following the morning meeting for an additional charge. Members receive a discount to attend workshops.
